The Chatham-Kent Cougars Football Club has plenty to offer!! But the amount of choices offered has caused some confusion. This section of the website is designed to guide parents or players on their best options. Please find the topic that fits your questions and we have done our best to describe that term or topic. We hope this is helpful.

Glossary of terms used by the Cougars Football Club

Minor Football

Minor football is house league football in the fall. Practices are in Chatham-Kent and the games will be played in Chatham-Kent and Windsor. Minor sign-up will be offered to those who have attended the Football Fundamental Clinics and the NFL Canada Clinics. Minor football is for grade 5 – grade 8 players. Football equipment will be provided by the Cougars football club. Recommended for players looking to experience football prior to high school.

Peewee Minor

Peewee Minor is house league football in the fall. Practices are in Chatham-Kent and the games will be played in Chatham-Kent and Windsor. Minor sign-up will be offered to those who have attended the Football Fundamental Clinics and the NFL Canada Clinics. Minor football is for grade 7 and grade 8 players. Football equipment will be provided by the Cougars football club. Recommended for players looking to experience football prior to high school.

Atom Minor

Atom Minor is house league football in the fall. Practices are in Chatham-Kent and the games will be played in Chatham-Kent and Windsor. Tyke Minor sign-up will be offered to those who have attended the Football Fundamental Clinics and the NFL Canada Clinics. Minor football is for grade 3 and grade 4 players. Football equipment will be provided by the Cougars football club. Recommended for players looking to experience football prior to high school.

Tyke Minor

Peewee Travel

Peewee football is for players 14 and under. Peewee Travel is played in the spring/summer. Tryouts start in May. The regular season will go until the 3rd week of July. The season consists of 8 games in total. Four home games will be played in Chatham-Kent and four away games in Ontario. A coach/bus will be provided for away games for players and coaches.

JR Varsity Travel

JR Varsity football is for players 16 and under. JR Travel is played in the spring/summer. Tryouts start in May. The regular season will go until the 3rd week of July. The season consists of 8 games in total. Four home games will be played in Chatham-Kent and four away games in Ontario. A coach/bus will be provided for away games for players and coaches.

Varsity Travel

Varsity football is for players 19 and under. Varsity Travel is played in the spring/summer. Tryouts start in May. The regular season will go until the 3rd week of July. The season consists of 8 games in total. Four home games will be played in Chatham-Kent and four away games in Ontario. A coach/bus will be provided for away games for players and coaches.

1. Is football safe?

The Chatham-Kent Cougars Football Club offers football clinics where safety and football fundamentals are emphasised to everyone. During our clinics we group players by size and skill level. New equipment has been purchased with safety in mind. The club has consulted local paediatricians and has researched youth football material on safety. We believe equipping our youth with new equipment and teaching them safety at a young age will empower players to safe techniques prior to high school, travel football, university football, and beyond.

2. My child is in grade 2 and under, is there anything available for my child?

The clinics and programs offered are recommended for grade 3 and up. We recommend parents and youth in this category coming out and watching some of our outdoor clinics, flag leagues, minor football practices and games. Please contact Selwyn Jordan if you have a special request for your son or daughter in grade 2.

Yes. We offer an all day Kent County indoor Clinic to teach football fundamentals and fun that runs March 1st. We also offer an NFL Canada outdoor tackle clinic recommended for grade 3s and up. Also we have an Atom Flag football league for grade 4,5,6 that runs from April 28th to June 25th . In the fall we have Atom Minor football for grade 5 and grade 6 (10 and 11 years old as of Dec 31st). Minor football sign-up will take place after our April football clinics. Minor football will be first offered to those players who have attended our clinics.

5. My child is in grade 5, is there anything available for him or her?

Yes. We offer an all day Kent County indoor Clinic to teach football fundamentals and fun that runs March 1st. Also we have an Atom Flag football league for grade 4,5,6 that runs from April 23rd to June 26th . In the fall we have Atom Minor football for grade 5 and grade 6 (10 and 11 years old as of Dec 31st). Minor football sign-up will take place after our April football clinics. Minor football will be first offered to those players who have attended our clinics.

If your son or daughter is NOT playing JR high school football in Chatham-Kent during the spring or high school football is not available at their high school.

Yes. We offer an all day Kent County indoor Clinic to teach football fundamentals that runs March 1st. We offer an NFL Canada outdoor tackle clinic for those new to tackle football. If your son or daughter enjoyed and excelled in the NFL Canada clinics, he/she can tryout for our Under 15 Peewee Travel team or Under 17 JR Travel team. Tryouts will start in early May.

If your son or daughter is playing JR high school football in Chatham during the spring.

Yes. he/she can tryout for our Under 15 Peewee Travel team or Under 17 JR Travel team. Tryouts will start in early May. We offer an NFL Canada outdoor tackle clinic. We are in the process of inviting University coaches and SR varsity coaches to help with these clinics which we believe would be a great experience for players with football experience. Check the website for coaches that have confirmed their attendance.

10. I am in grade 10 or my my child is in grade 10, is there anything available for him or her?

If your son or daughter is NOT playing JR high school football in Chatham-Kent during the spring or high school football is not available at their high school.

Yes. We offer an all day Kent County indoor Clinic to teach football fundamentals and fun that runs March 1st. We offer an NFL Canada outdoor tackle clinic for those new to tackle football. If your son or daughter enjoyed and excelled in the NFL Canada clinics, he/she can tryout for our Under 15 Peewee Travel team or Under 17 JR Travel team. Tryouts will start in early May.

If your son or daughter is playing JR high school football in Chatham during the spring.

If your son or daughter is playing JR high school football in Sarnia.

Yes. he/she can tryout for our Under 17 JR Travel team. Sign-up for travel football will be March 27, 28, 29 from 6pm – 9pm at the YMCA and April 1st from Noon to 4pm at Jersey Sports Grill. Tryouts will start in early May. We offer an NFL Canada outdoor tackle clinic. We are in the process of inviting University coaches and SR varsity coaches to help with these clinics which we believe would be a great experience for players with football experience. Check the website for coaches that have confirmed their attendance.

11. I am in grade 11, is there anything available for me?

If you are 16 years old as of June 1st.

Yes, you can tryout for our Under 17 JR Varsity Travel team. Tryouts will start in early May.

If you are 17 years old or older.

You can play Varsity Travel Football. Also you can volunteer or help coach at our football clinics. These hours will go towards your volunteer hours or can used on a job resume. If you are interested in volunteering save the file to your computer and fill out Volunteer Profile Form. Then please attach this form/document to an email and send to seljordan@sympatico.ca. Thanks.

12. I am in grade 12 or 13, is there anything available for me?

If you are 17, 18, or 19 years old.

Yes, you can tryout for our Under 20 Varsity Travel team. Tryouts will start in early May.

If you are 17 years old or older as of June 1st.

13. How can I volunteer?

14. I understand the Cougars Club is not for profit, how can I give a donation or help?

Please make any donations payable to “Chatham-Kent Cougars Football Club” and email seljordan@sympatico.ca or call 519.351.6662 to make arrangements for delivery. 15. What is involved with Cheerleading?
